I have a particular fondness for history so I feel I should know a lot of the answers to these free quiz questions but sadly I do not due to the fact that all my love of history is inspired entirely by Channel 4's Time Team which is a lot of fun and gives a really wonderful social context to things but doesn't really give you time to remember facts and dates. Time Team is actually a bt of a guilty pleasure of mine and I love to record them on Sky plus and have a watch when I need to chill out. Nothing bad ever happens on that show, except perhaps when Tony steps in Phil's trench and he gets shouted at.

My particular area of love is the Romans. I am fascinated by the fact that this extremely sophisticated civilzation arose and took over half the known world, spreading its tentacles all the way to Scotland, and then over a period of several centuries the Empire collapsed in on itself leaving cultures like ours in shell shock as the relatively simple peoples such as the Saxons came marauding. We often tend to think of history as a fairly steady progression of development as each person leanrs from the last, but this is a totally modern and distorted view of things. The so-called Dark Ages weren't as bad as many people think, however they do represent a down-turn in the social and political system and there proably never been as successful an adminstrative system since the Romans until the present day. I think that if you showed someone Medieval times in isolation, verus the first century Rome, you wouldn't know which came first in terms of society and civility.

I also find history very exciting when you can see something very old relating to something very modern. A great example of this is Chester where you can actually look at the ground plan of certain roads and see that it has a Roman fort as its template underneath. You can still see the distinctive curve to the Roman corners and when you realise where the administrative centre was, you realise that the placement of the amphitheatre isn't so strange after all, as it's right outside wherre you'd want some entertainment!
